Technology challenges construction companies face
Construction businesses don't work from one office. A quantity surveyor covering three sites, a project manager in a cabin and a director reviewing figures on the road all need the same drawings, systems and people wherever they are. The problems we see most often are:
- Site connectivity. Compounds need internet from day one, but fixed lines can take months.
- Out-of-date drawings. Revisions get emailed around, and teams on site work from old versions.
- Cyber attacks and payment fraud. The NCSC says construction firms are targeted because of the sensitive data they hold and the high-value payments they handle.
- Tender requirements. Public sector and principal contractor tenders increasingly ask for Cyber Essentials.
- Mobile devices. Dozens of phones and tablets need to be managed, often across several networks, with no way to wipe a lost device.
- Project platforms. Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Viewpoint and Sage only work when the devices, Microsoft 365 and connectivity underneath them do. We look after that layer so your project systems stay up.
- Too many suppliers. Separate companies for IT, broadband, phones and mobiles, each blaming the other when something goes wrong.
How Indigo supports construction companies
Managed IT support
We provide a proactive helpdesk, monitoring and security for head office and site teams. We set up Microsoft Teams and SharePoint so every project has one place for drawings, RAMS and site records, with version control. IT support for construction companies →
Site connectivity
We get site cabins and compounds online quickly with 4G/5G, move them onto fixed lines when available, and add automatic failover so a dropped line doesn't stop the site. Secure WiFi covers staff, subcontractors and visitors. Construction site internet →
Business mobiles and devices
We supply rugged handsets and tablets on EE, O2 or Vodafone, whichever covers your sites best, all managed through Microsoft Intune so lost devices can be locked or wiped. Rugged phones for construction →
Cyber security and Cyber Essentials
We protect every device against viruses and ransomware (endpoint detection and response), filter email to stop invoice fraud, and add multi-factor authentication (a second check when people sign in) and staff training. We can take you through Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus, and we hold both ourselves. We also support your phone system on 8x8, 3CX or Teams Phone, so site managers can take office calls on their mobile.
Why construction companies choose Indigo
- 15+ construction businesses supported
- 100+ Microsoft 365 migrations completed
- 2,000+ endpoints managed
- 95% client retention
- 13 minutes average first response (September 2026)
- 4.98/5 customer satisfaction
- Cyber Essentials Plus and ISO 27001:2022 certified
Example: a Central Scotland building firm, around 160 staff. The firm had no reliable way to get its site cabins online. We connected each site with Starlink and linked every site and the head office through Cato Networks SD-WAN, so site teams work on the same secure network as the office. At the same time we brought every device under Microsoft Intune and moved the firm's Azure servers from pay-as-you-go to reserved instances (a lower price for committing in advance) to cut running costs. The firm has since achieved Cyber Essentials Plus.

Frequently asked questions
Why do construction companies need specialist IT support?
Construction companies work across head office, live sites and temporary compounds, with mobile teams, large drawing files and subcontractors who need access. General IT support is often built around a single office. A provider that understands construction plans for site connectivity, device management, document version control and tender requirements such as Cyber Essentials.
How do you get internet to a construction site?
For a new site compound, we normally start with a 4G or 5G router, which is usually live within 2–3 working days. If the project is long enough, we order a fixed line or leased line and keep the 4G/5G router as automatic backup. We then set up secure WiFi for staff, subcontractors and visitors.
Do construction companies need Cyber Essentials?
Increasingly, yes. Central government contracts involving personal data or OFFICIAL information require Cyber Essentials (PPN 014, which replaced PPN 09/23 in February 2025), and many local authorities, housing associations and principal contractors now ask for it in pre-qualification. Certification also reduces common risks. According to the NCSC, organisations with Cyber Essentials are 92% less likely to claim on their cyber insurance.
Why are construction companies targeted by cyber criminals?
The NCSC says construction firms are targeted because they hold sensitive data, such as tender documents, drawings and staff records, and handle high-value payments. Invoice and payment-diversion fraud by email is a particular risk. Across UK businesses, 43% reported a breach or attack in the last year, most often phishing (Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2026).
Can Indigo support our sites outside Glasgow?
Yes. Indigo is based in Glasgow and Livingston and supports construction companies and their sites across Scotland. Most support is delivered remotely. Our engineers visit head offices and sites when hands-on work is needed, and we can connect site compounds anywhere with 4G/5G connectivity.
