Indigo Unified Communications sets up guest WiFi with branded login pages (captive portals) for venues, offices and events across Glasgow and Scotland. We build it on Ubiquiti UniFi, keep guests on their own network away from tills, CCTV and staff devices, set fair-use limits so one guest can't slow everyone down, and ask guests to accept your terms of use. Our venue WiFi work includes SWG3, Falkirk Football Club and Wonderworld Group's 10 sites.

What is a captive portal?

A captive portal is the page a guest sees when they join your WiFi, before they can browse. It can carry your logo and colours, ask the guest to accept your terms of use, and, if you choose, invite them to sign up to your marketing. Once they've connected, they're online, and your business network stays out of reach.

What's included

  • A branded login page on Ubiquiti UniFi, with your logo, colours and wording
  • Terms of use acceptance before anyone gets online
  • A separate guest network, kept apart from tills and card payments, ticketing, CCTV and staff devices
  • Fair-use bandwidth limits per guest, so the connection stays usable when you're busy
  • Optional marketing sign-up on the login page, set up the way you decide as data controller
  • Monitoring, updates and support from our Glasgow team, as part of our business WiFi service. Guest WiFi is an add-on to a business WiFi network we install and manage, rather than a standalone service.

Why keep guests on a separate network?

Guests should never share a network with your business. On a single shared ("flat") network, a visitor's phone sits alongside your tills, cameras and staff laptops. That's a security risk, and a busy crowd can slow card payments to the point where queues build.

We put guests on their own network with their own limits. Card payments and ticketing get their own protected network with priority over guest traffic, which is also a basic requirement of the payment card security standard (PCI DSS). A problem on the guest network can't reach them.

Can we collect marketing sign-ups through guest WiFi?

Yes, if it's done lawfully. Under UK GDPR and PECR, marketing consent generally has to be freely given, so the WiFi should work whether or not the guest ticks the marketing box. You decide what to ask for as the data controller. We make sure the network collects only what you've decided to collect. Our article explains the rules in detail: Can venues use guest WiFi sign-ups for marketing?

Guest WiFi for events and temporary sites

For events, pop-ups and temporary sites without a fixed line, we can provide WiFi over a 4G or 5G connection, which is usually live within 2–3 working days. The same rules apply: a branded login page, a separate guest network and limits sized for the crowd you expect. Venues can arrange out-of-hours and event-day engineer cover at extra cost. Frequently asked questions

What is a captive portal for guest WiFi?

A captive portal is the login page guests see when they join your WiFi. It usually carries your branding, asks the guest to accept your terms of use and can include an optional marketing sign-up. Indigo Unified Communications builds captive portals on Ubiquiti UniFi, on a guest network kept separate from your business systems.

Is it legal to collect email addresses through guest WiFi?

Yes, as long as you follow UK GDPR and PECR. Tell guests clearly what you'll do with their details, and make marketing consent optional so the WiFi still works if they don't sign up. As the venue, you're the data controller and decide what to collect. Our guest WiFi marketing article covers consent, the soft opt-in and retention.

How do you stop guests slowing down the tills?

By keeping them apart. Guests go on their own network with fair-use limits per device, and card payments and ticketing sit on a separate protected network with priority over guest traffic. Busy guest WiFi can't slow the tills, and a problem on the guest network can't reach them. This separation is also a basic PCI DSS requirement.

Can you provide guest WiFi for a one-off event?

Yes. Where there's no fixed line, we can connect an event or temporary site over 4G or 5G, which is usually live within 2–3 working days. We size the guest network and bandwidth limits for the crowd you expect, and event-day engineer cover can be arranged at extra cost.

Which venues use Indigo for WiFi?

All of our WiFi is built on Ubiquiti UniFi and managed centrally, so we can monitor and update every site remotely.
