IT Support for Renewable Energy Companies in Scotland
Secure, resilient technology for offices, remote sites and field teams.

Indigo Unified Communications provides managed IT support, connectivity, cyber security and business mobiles to renewable energy organisations across Scotland. We support more than 10 renewable energy businesses, including solar and battery storage specialists, installers and contractors, and developers and consultancies. We connect remote and rural sites, secure field devices and protect project and commercial data, all from our Glasgow base. We're an IT support provider for renewable energy companies, not a renewables software vendor. We look after the helpdesk, devices, connectivity and security for the people who design, install and operate the assets.
Technology challenges in renewable energy
Renewable energy businesses often work where technology is hardest to deliver: rural and remote sites, long project timelines, and engineers spread across Scotland. The problems we see most are:
- Remote-site connectivity. Scotland has the lowest 4G coverage by area of any UK nation (Ofcom, 2025), and many sites have no fixed line.
- Field engineers. Teams need secure access to drawings, permits and reporting tools from the field, often on shared or rugged devices.
- Supply chain security. Large developers and utilities increasingly require suppliers to show cyber security controls such as Cyber Essentials before work is awarded.
- Keeping office IT and site systems separate. Office systems should be clearly separated from site monitoring and control equipment, so a problem in one can't spread to the other.
- Growth. Businesses scaling quickly for new projects need to onboard people and devices in days, not weeks.
How Indigo supports renewable energy organisations
Managed IT support
We provide a proactive helpdesk, monitoring, Microsoft 365 management and backup for office and field teams, with new starters' laptops and phones set up in advance through Microsoft Intune. Managed IT support →
Remote and rural site connectivity
We compare 4G, 5G, fixed line and satellite options for each site, then add automatic failover and secure remote access so engineers can reach company systems from anywhere. Renewable energy connectivity →
Mobiles for field teams
We supply mobiles on EE, O2 or Vodafone, chosen by coverage at your sites, with rugged handsets and tablets managed centrally through Intune. Renewable energy mobiles →
Cyber security
We protect every device against viruses and ransomware (endpoint detection and response), add multi-factor authentication (a second check when people sign in) and support you through Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus certification. On our Platinum package, a 24/7 security operations centre watches your systems for threats. We also support your phone system on 8x8, 3CX or Teams Phone, so field teams stay reachable on one business number.
Why renewable energy organisations choose Indigo
- 10+ renewable energy clients
- 2,000+ endpoints managed
- 95% client retention
- 13 minutes average first response (September 2026)
- Cyber Essentials Plus and ISO 27001:2022 certified
Client example: Greenversity. Greenversity's cyber insurer required stronger controls over the devices its teams use. We rolled out Microsoft Intune so every laptop, tablet and phone is managed centrally, with security settings, updates and remote wipe in place, which met the insurer's requirements. We also built a SharePoint system to track the deployment of solar panels from job to job. It's now the standard approach across hundreds of Greenversity installations. Frequently asked questions
How do you get reliable internet to a remote renewable energy site?
We start with a coverage check at the site. Depending on location, we use 4G or 5G routers with external antennas, a fixed line or leased line where one is available, or satellite where mobile coverage is poor. For sites that can't be left offline, we combine two connection types with automatic failover.
Do renewable energy suppliers need Cyber Essentials?
Many do. Larger developers, utilities and public bodies increasingly ask suppliers to show cyber security controls, and Cyber Essentials is the most common baseline. Central government contracts involving personal data or OFFICIAL information require it under PPN 014, which replaced PPN 09/23 in February 2025. Indigo holds Cyber Essentials Plus and helps clients achieve certification.
Can field engineers access company systems securely?
Yes. We give field engineers secure access to email, Teams, SharePoint and business applications from managed laptops, tablets and phones. Multi-factor authentication and Microsoft Intune keep company data protected, and a lost device can be wiped remotely.
Does Indigo support operational technology like SCADA?
Indigo supports your business IT: office systems, devices, connectivity, Microsoft 365 and cyber security. We don't manage turbine, inverter or grid control systems. We do make sure your business network is kept separate from them, and we work alongside your equipment manufacturer (OEM) or control-systems provider where the two meet.
