Indigo Unified Communications connects remote and rural renewable energy sites across Scotland. We check coverage from EE, O2 and Vodafone at the exact location, and usually have a site online within 2–3 working days using 4G or 5G. Where mobile coverage is poor, we use satellite, and we add fixed lines and automatic failover for long-term sites. Our Glasgow team monitors every connection.

Why remote sites are hard to connect

Solar farms and battery storage sites are usually built where land is available, not where broadband is. Fixed lines can be miles away, and mobile coverage varies: Scotland has the lowest 4G coverage by area of any UK nation (Ofcom, 2025). Yet site cabins still need to run drawings, permits, cameras and Teams calls during construction, and the finished site may need a reliable business connection for the team that maintains it.

How we connect a remote site

  1. Coverage check at the exact site location across EE, O2 and Vodafone
  2. 4G/5G router with an external antenna, usually live within 2–3 working days
  3. Satellite where mobile coverage is too weak
  4. Fixed line for long-term sites, where one can be reached
  5. Automatic failover between two connection types, so the site stays online
  6. Site WiFi (Ubiquiti UniFi) for cabins and welfare units, with separate access for contractors

What's included

Frequently asked questions

How do you get internet to a solar farm or battery storage site?

We start with a coverage check at the exact location. Most sites can be connected within 2–3 working days using a 4G or 5G router with an external antenna, on whichever network is strongest there. Where mobile coverage is too weak, we use satellite. Long-term sites can add a fixed line, with the mobile or satellite link kept as backup.

Is satellite internet reliable enough for a site?

Modern low-orbit satellite services are fast enough for cloud apps, video calls and cameras in most of Scotland, and they work where there's no mobile signal at all. For sites that can't be left offline, we pair satellite with 4G or 5G so there are two independent connections.

Is this for the site's operational monitoring?

This service is for business connectivity: site cabins, staff, contractors, cameras and access to company systems. Grid, inverter and battery monitoring links are usually specified by the equipment provider or grid operator. We keep our business network separate from them.
