Indigo Unified Communications supplies rugged phones, tablets and business mobile contracts to construction companies across Scotland. We're a leading plan.com partner in Scotland and independent across EE, O2 and Vodafone, so we choose the network by checking coverage at your sites. We supply a large range of rugged devices built for dust, water and drops, and manage every device through Microsoft Intune so a lost phone can be locked or wiped. A dedicated account manager in Glasgow reviews your usage and costs.

What's different about mobiles for construction?

In a construction business, phones do more than make calls. They open drawings, record snags and photos, complete permits and RAMS, and connect site managers to the office. They also get dropped, soaked and covered in dust. The usual problems we see are:

  • Broken handsets. Consumer phones don't last on site, so replacement costs and downtime add up.
  • Poor coverage at sites. One network rarely covers every site well, especially in rural Scotland.
  • No control over devices. Phones with company email and drawings on them, and no way to wipe them when they're lost or when someone leaves.
  • Messy contracts. Handsets spread across several networks and tariffs, with nobody watching the bill.
  • Staff turnover. Operatives and site staff come and go, so phones need to be set up and reassigned quickly.

What's included

  • A coverage check at your offices and sites before we recommend a network
  • Contracts on EE, O2 or Vodafone, or a mix if different teams work in different areas
  • A large range of rugged phones and tablets, built for dust, water and drops, alongside standard handsets for office staff
  • Microsoft Intune device management: email, Teams and apps set up securely, devices kept updated, and lost or stolen phones locked or wiped remotely
  • Phones configured before they arrive, so a new starter can use theirs on day one
  • Quick reassignment when someone leaves, with company data removed first
  • The my.plan app (plan.com) for managing a site fleet: live usage and costs, spending caps, blocks on content and apps, and device location, so you can see where a site phone was last used
  • Usage alerts and caps so there are no surprise bills
  • A dedicated account manager with regular contract and cost reviews
  • Number porting and a managed switch from your current provider
  • One Glasgow team for mobiles, IT support, site internet and phones

Client example

A Glasgow construction business, around 100 staff. Phones kept getting dropped and broken on site, so the firm was paying for far more replacement handsets than it should. Our mobile team found a rugged handset suited to how their site teams work, and reviewed their mobile spend at the same time. Together, those changes saved the business more than £4,000 in the first calendar year.

Kilmac, a Dundee civil engineering contractor with more than 180 staff. Data overage charges kept appearing on the monthly bill with no warning. We moved its 155+ connections onto a plan.com shared data plan and send weekly usage updates, so costs are now predictable. Read the Kilmac case study →

Frequently asked questions

Are rugged phones worth it for construction?

Usually, yes, for anyone working on site. Rugged phones are built to survive drops, dust and water, so they last far longer than consumer handsets on a construction site. Fewer broken phones means lower replacement costs and less time without a working phone. Office-based staff rarely need one.

Which mobile network is best for construction sites in Scotland?

It depends on where your sites are. EE, O2 and Vodafone each perform better in different areas, particularly outside the cities, and Scotland has the lowest 4G coverage by area of any UK nation (Ofcom, 2025). Indigo checks coverage at your actual site addresses before recommending a network, and can mix networks if needed.

What happens if a site phone is lost or stolen?

Every phone we supply is managed through Microsoft Intune, so we can lock it or wipe company data remotely as soon as it's reported. A replacement can be configured before it reaches site, so the person is back working quickly.

Can we move our existing numbers?

Yes. We port your existing numbers to the new network and schedule the switch so nobody is left without service. Your account manager handles the paperwork with your old provider.
